To prevent pipes from freezing, insulate all exterior pipes and be sure to keep your interior house temperature above freezing, even if the house is vacant. Your pipes can freeze if the air around them fall below 32 degrees. It could take time in order for the pipes to thaw so that you can have running water. However, frozen pipes commonly break or crack pipes, which will cause an enormous mess and repair bill.
If any water pipe that you have freezes, switch on the nearest faucet tap to that pipe so that water can exit when the pipe thaws. This will relive some of the pressure, which can prevent further damage to your home.
If you have a clogged toilet and a plunger is not helping to clear the blockage, and the plunger isn’t working, it’s possible to resolve this by pouring warm water from a bucket directly into the toilet bowl from about waist level. Repeat this procedure if necessary as the water goes back to a lower level.
Don’t pour cooking grease, grease or fat down the drain. This is especially damaging to garbage disposals because the fat can make the blades turn more slowly and less freely. Make sure you dispose of all oils away from the sink.
If your home has well water and you start seeing orange or pink stains, you have too much iron in your water. This is fixed by using water softener, which you can buy at a store, or you can have someone come to your home and fix it.
